Q: What's a zine?

A: A zine is a fan-created work based around a theme, with many artists working together to create art or other types of work following that theme, which would be put together! Zines can be a physical, printed book, a digital PDF, or both. Our zine is based on Splatoon 1&2 's soundtrack, as well as the concept of "gijinka".

Q: What's a Gijinka?

A: Gijinka is a Japanese word, which translates directly into "humanization" It is also called anthropomorphism, which is when people take non-human creatures, objects, or many other things and re-imagine them into human-like characters.  In this zine, we're re-imagining Splatoon songs as evolved sea creature characters, such as but not limited to Inklings, Octarians/Octolings, Salmonids, Jellyfish, Crustacean, etc.

Q: How many artists will be allowed in the lineup?

We will be selecting 40 to 75 artists to design a character based on the song they have chosen and make a full-colored piece featuring their character.

Q: What will I have to present in the application forms?

A: We request 3-5 examples of your finest artworks for the applications.   You can also include any art-only portfolios or social media pages Experience from working in other zines is not necessarily required.

Q: Is this zine for profit? What kind of format will it be in?

A: This is a free digital zine, and one artist can have up to one song for a single character on the zine. Anything that breaks one of our cardinal rules may result in disqualificationThe zine will be released in a downloadable PDF file.

Q: What kind of characters are allowed?

A: The characters that will be presented in this zine are gijinkas (real definition: humanized version(s) of some certain thing(s)) based on some Splatoon songs. In this case, they are not humanized, but Splatoon-ified (Inkling, Octoling, Salmonid, Jellyfish, Octarian, Crustacean, Urchin, any other evolved marine species, etc) And of course, NSFW of any kind or off-topic characters are not allowed.

Q: What kind of non-canon species can I use?

A: You can use existing species or make up new species.  Fanmade -ling species, like Salmonlings, Jellylings, Mantalings, Sharklings, etc... are not allowed due to character variety reasons.

Q: Is traditional art or other forms of art allowed?
Traditional art is allowed if the submitted copy is scanned by the artist (taken photos are not allowed) Please have it scanned at 300 dpi or higher
. 3D art is allowed as long as all of the models used are completely and originally made by you.  Writing, crafts, or other unmentioned media excluding digital art are not allowed for this zine.

Q: Can I collaborate with someone on a zine piece?

A: No collaboration pieces are allowed since those could postpone the release.
